Our Wilderness Outdoor Opportunity Discovery Schools (WOODS) care for young people who need more structure and discipline than our Residential Care program provides.
Often adolescents cannot cope with the rigors and expectations of traditional learning and living environments. These children, struggling with anger, pain, and frustration, act out. Their behavior puts them in unfortunate situations and often these children do not make appropriate decisions.
The mission of the WOODS program is to provide at-risk youth long term residential care through a non-traditional educational environment.
This highly structured program is best suited for adolescents who require a controlled environment due to severe problems at home, with peers, and at school. A combination of work, counseling, education, wilderness experiences, and spiritual ministering allows HopeTree to meet its goal of serving each child by enhancing their emotional, educational, physical, social, and spiritual development.
Education is a key ingredient of the WOODS program. A year-round educational facility, WOODS prides itself in helping most of the graduates improve their academic abilities by two grade levels in an average of 15 months.
The WOODS educational facility is interdepartmentally licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia and is accredited through Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Educational Facilities (VAISEF).
Bickers Camp on Craig in Craig County serves up to 24 boys.
